Boxing hand wraps protect the small bones and joints of the hands while supporting the wrists during training.
Why are hand wraps important?
Punching places considerable pressure on the hands and wrists. Properly applied wraps help stabilise the wrist, support the knuckles and reduce unnecessary movement inside the glove.
What you need
- A clean pair of boxing hand wraps
- Clean, dry hands
- A few minutes before training
How to wrap your hands
Step 1 – Thumb loop: Place the loop around your thumb and guide the wrap across the back of your hand towards the wrist.
Step 2 – Wrist: Wrap around the wrist several times. It should feel supported but not uncomfortably tight.
Step 3 – Palm and knuckles: Guide the wrap across the palm and then around the knuckles two or three times.
Step 4 – Between the fingers: Pass the wrap between the fingers to keep them stable and prevent excessive spreading during impact.
Step 5 – Thumb: Wrap around the thumb for additional support.
Step 6 – Finish at the wrist: Use the remaining length to reinforce the wrist, then secure the hook-and-loop fastening.
Useful tips
- Your fingers should not become numb, cold or discoloured.
- Always wear wraps underneath boxing gloves.
- Unroll and dry the wraps after every training session.
- Wash them regularly to prevent odours and bacteria.
Correct hand wrapping takes only a few minutes and provides valuable protection during every boxing session.
