Filip Hrgović produced one of the biggest upsets of the boxing season. At London’s O2 Arena, he stopped the previously unbeaten Moses Itauma in the ninth round, claimed the vacant IBF title and became the first Croatian heavyweight world champion.
Itauma started strongly and hurt Hrgović early in the fight. After six rounds, the young British boxer appeared to be in control, but Hrgović remained patient and allowed his opponent to expend energy.
The momentum began to change in the later rounds. In the ninth, Hrgović increased the pressure as Itauma struggled to defend himself. Itauma’s corner threw in the towel, ending the fight by technical knockout.
The victory is the biggest achievement of Hrgović’s career and demonstrates the importance of experience, conditioning, technique and preparation at the highest level of professional boxing.
