MMA gloves and boxing gloves are designed for different types of training. The right choice depends on whether you need maximum protection for punching or freedom for grappling.
Boxing gloves
Boxing gloves have a closed design and considerably more padding. They protect the hands during repeated punches and provide greater protection for a sparring partner.
- Best for: boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai and striking practice
- Typical weight: 10–20 oz
- Main advantage: more padding for punching and sparring
- Limitation: unsuitable for gripping and grappling
MMA gloves
MMA gloves have open fingers and less padding. They allow athletes to punch, grip and work on the ground, but they offer less protection during heavy striking exchanges.
- Best for: MMA, grappling and technical ground work with strikes
- Typical weight: 4–7 oz
- Main advantage: freedom to grip and grapple
- Limitation: less padding than boxing gloves
Which gloves should you choose?
Choose boxing gloves for boxing, bag work and regular striking sparring. Choose MMA gloves when your training combines striking with takedowns, grips and ground work. Many MMA athletes use both: boxing gloves for safer striking practice and MMA gloves for sport-specific technical sessions.
Whichever type you choose, use the correct size and suitable hand wraps to support your wrists and knuckles.
